Be the Shift, Be the Native Vote

I am excited to see Twilight actor Chaske Spencer (Lakota Sioux) as a spokesperson for the “Native Vote 2012” Campaign. One of the greatest challenges faced by American Indian tribes is the continuation of oppressive federal policies toward the tribes. One of the first steps to initiating a shift in these policies is for Native Americans to exercise their right to vote and to elect legislators who understand and support the need for empowerment and change.

According to the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI), only 2 out of every 5 American Indians eligible to vote are registered. More than 1 million Native Americans who are eligible to vote are unregistered voters. Spencer is reaching out to help the NCAI change this.  

The NCAI is working in conjunction with a national nonprofit, Rock the Vote, to provide resources for online voter registration. The NCAI is also organizing a week of events at tribal schools and local Boys & Girls Clubs across the nation. These events will educate Native youth about the power of voting, civic engagement, and asking their parents and relatives to vote.

• Encourage your friends and family to register and vote.

• Volunteer to be a community leader/coordinator for the Native Vote Network.
